On a damp Saturday in 2003 the Bottesford Environment and Conservation Group spent the morning in the beautiful surroundings of St Marys Church, Bottesford putting 7 bird boxes high up in the trees within the churchyard – with the kind permission of Rev Charles Bradshaw.

The boxes – skilfully built by Bottesford man John Richardson – offer “accommodation” for an assortment of birds from a small Nuthatch to a rather larger Tawny Owl.

Two further sites were completed during March that year. We have sought advice from local experts regarding the correct style of box and location and gained permission from landowners.  This project was started in October 2002 and is ongoing.

Our objective is to erect a number of bird boxes, of varying sizes and for various species, within the Parish of Bottesford. We are very aware of the need to keep the fine balance of the various species of birds that we have already in our local area.  We therefore have involved expert advice from organisations such as RSPB etc. about the location the boxes should be put in, and what type we need.

BECV will check and record use of the bird boxes and maintain them over the years.
